UI Elementary Education alumnus Kenny Gaskin spent his childhood looking up to his teachers. He’s now a teacher with Des Moines Public Schools, inspiring students and building a sense of community in the classroom.

More than 20 participants from across the state recently participated in a professional development summit to learn how to even better serve and support multilingual communities in Iowa. The summit was made possible thanks to a grant from the U.S. Department of Education to launch the National Resource Center for Translation and Global Literacy.

The Dr. Ernest Pascarella Memorial Scholarship fund was established by the family of the late professor emeritus of Higher Education and Student Affairs (HESA) to assist graduate students in HESA with the greatest financial need.

Higher Education and Student Affairs Professor Sherry K. Watt was awarded the American College Personnel Association (ACPA): College Student Educators International’s Contribution to Knowledge Award for the research she does on strategies for engaging across difference using practices that build stamina within the self and in relationships with others to sustain community.

University of Iowa College of Education alumna Lauren Irwin was awarded the Marylu McEwen Dissertation of the Year Award from College Student Educators International.

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded the UI College of Education a $1.26 million grant for a program that will partner with Iowa school districts, community colleges, and community partners. The program will support 40 high quality elementary teachers through coursework and field experiences, resulting in a Bachelor of Arts, a teaching license, and a K12 ESL endorsement in Iowa.

Ryan Frank knew he wanted to bring social emotional learning into educational settings after his experience working with students for AmeriCorps. Frank worked at the non-profit Catherine McAuley Center as part of his AmeriCorps placement after he received his undergraduate degree in social work and Spanish from the University of Northern Iowa. 

The University of Iowa College of Education’s online academic graduate programs have earned national recognition and are now ranked among the best in the country.

Kirkwood Community College students can now seamlessly transfer to the University of Iowa College of Education to obtain their elementary education licensure, due to a new articulation agreement between the two institutions.
