Undergraduate Admission
The
Office of Teacher Education and Student Services coordinates
the procedures for admission to programs in the College of
Education at both the Undergraduate and Graduate levels. Either
the College of Liberal
Arts or the Graduate
College governs all programs. The application process,
therefore, involves application to the College
of Liberal Arts or Graduate
College in addition to the College
of Education. The Office
of Admissions can provide information on admissions procedures.
Students who have completed a baccalaureate
degree may be admitted to a teacher preparation program in
one of two ways.
- They may apply to the College of Liberal
Arts as post-baccalaureate students with senior standing.
Students selecting this option should not apply as special
students. Instead, they must apply to the appropriate teacher
education program following the undergraduate admissions
procedure.
- They
may apply to the Graduate
College with their objective stated as "certification
only" or in some secondary teaching areas with a Master of
Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) objective (English, Foreign Language,
Science). Or to the Social Studies M.A. Program B.
Dave Tingwald is responsible for coordinating the application
process to the Teacher Education Program (TEP) which prepares
students for initial teacher licensure.
Application
Deadlines
March
15,
for summer session or fall semester admission
October 15, spring semester admission
Admission to teacher education programs is competitive. Admission
requirements may vary by program*. In order to be considered
for admission to a teacher education program, an undergraduate
student must have met the following criteria:
- been
admitted to The University of Iowa in Liberal Arts with
the appropriate subject area major. The Office
of Admissions has application information.
- attained
sophomore standing (completed 33 semester
hours) prior to the semester during
which application for admission is made;
- achieved
a 2.70 grade-point average on all college course work as
well as course work completed at The University of Iowa
(some secondary teaching programs may have higher admission
g.p.a. and s.h. standards).
We
have a new exceptional admission policy which will now be called
our special consideration policy. We will continue
our policy of not accepting applications from any student who
has any grade point average below a 2.30. Applicants
with a UI and cum gpa above 2.3 may apply for admission under
Special Consideration if they meet one or more of the
following three criteria:
1 ) If the applicant has a documented disability for which
he or she is already receiving academic accommodations. Students
applying in this category must supply appropriate documentation
from Student Disability Services as part of their application.
2 ) If the applicant can show evidence that he or she has
had successful experience (3 years or more) working with students
in a pre-school or school setting.
3) If the applicant will add to the diversity of the teaching
profession.
Note: Students must indicate they are applying
under the Special Consideration category and explain the reasons
in a supplemental essay they write and submit with their TEP application.
Students applying under the Special Consideration category must
still submit scores on the Praxis I test that meet or exceed the
minimums required for admission. Students with gpas over 2.70
who want to be given Special Consideration can now apply under
this category.
After admission, students with Special Consideration status
must maintain a 2.7 grade point average for every semester
they are registered in the Teacher Education Program, but
the requirement that they maintain an overall grade point
average of 2.7 does not apply.

(Educational

Transfer Students: In addition to the other requirements of the application to the Teacher Education Program, applicants who have been enrolled in an education methods course or field experience at another institution are required to submit an additional Student Consent for Release of Records authorizing the College of Education to communicate with the other institution about the applicant's academic performance and professional behaviors. Note that this Student Consent form is different from and additional to the Student Consent form contained in the Teacher Education Program application packet.
