Graduate Assistantships

A variety of graduate teaching and research assistantships are awarded in the College of Education each year.  Most appointments are for nine months beginning with the start of the academic year.  Some appointments are for summer sessions only.  Appointments are usually made in late spring for the coming academic year.

Applicants should check directly with individual programs or departments for positions that may not be advertised here.

  • Research
  • Professional Development
  • Program development for pre-college students
  • Assessment and counseling

In addition to assistantships for the academic year, the Belin-Blank Center provides a number of assistantships for summer sessions.

 

Counseling, Rehabilitation and Student Development

The Department of Counseling, Rehabilitation and Student Development offers half-time and quarter-time graduate, teaching and research assistantships in:

  • Counselor Education
  • Rehabilitation Counseling
  • School Counseling
  • Student Development Program in Postsecondary Education
  • Student Affairs Administration and Research

 

Education Technology Center

Graduate assistants:

  • Teach "Technology in the Classroom" and other basic technology courses
  • Provide user assistance in computer labs
  • Work on technology projects for the College of Education

Half-time, quarter-time and one-eighth time assisantships are available.

 

Educational Policy and Leadership Studies

Graduate assistantships include:

  • Research and clinical assistance in EPLS Research Lab
  • Research assistantships in higher education, social foundations and educational administration
  • Teaching assistantships for the course "Human Relations for the classroom Teacher"

 

Iowa Testing Programs

Graduate assistantships with the Iowa Basic Skills Testing Program and the Iowa High School Testing Program include:

  • Assisting the directors of the programs in test development, reliability and validity studies
  • Data analysis
  • Occasional consulting with teachers in schools that participate in these testing programs

Preference is given to Ph.D. students in Measurement and Statistics

 

Psychological and Quantitative Foundations

The Department of Psychological and Quantitative Foundations offers teaching and research assistantships in:

  • Educational psychology
  • Statistics
  • Counseling psychology
  • School psychology

 

Student Field Experiences

Assistantships to:

  • Supervise elementary student teachers

Applicants need to have completed a certification program in the United States and have at least 3 years of appropriate teaching experience.

 

Teaching and Learning

Most graduate assistantships in the Department of Teaching and Learning require prior completion of a teacher certification program and appropriate related experience.  Graduate assistantships in Teaching and Learning programs involve:

  • Teaching sections of undergraduate courses under supervision of faculty
  • Supervising student teachers and conducting student teaching seminars
  • Supervising practicum students
  • Assisting in preparation of instructional materials
  • Assisting in faculty research and grant activities


Programs in Teaching and Learning include Elementary Education, Art Education, English Education, Developmental Reading, Foreign Language Education, Foundations, Language, Literacy and Culture, Mathematics Education, Music Education, Science Education, Social Studies Education and Special Education.

 

Special Graduate Assistantships

Recipients assist the faculty in research and other scholarly activity in a field related to the student's interests.  Students from all education program areas may apply.  Assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis.

 

Graduate Presidential Fellowship

For first-year graduate students of exceptional promise entering doctoral programs.  Minimum stipend of $21,000 (academic year plus summer session) plus full tuition.  Renewable.  Nominations are made by the appropriate department chair on the basis of the student's Graduate College application credentials.  No special application is required.  Nominations are accepted beginning in the fall one year in advance.

 

Graduate Merit Fellowships

One year fellowships administered by the Graduate College for entering minority graduate students.  Nominations are made by graduate programs.
