Special Education

Welcome!

Welcome to the Special Education Program in the Department of Teaching and Learning at The University of Iowa. Our programs and specializations are designed to develop future professionals in the fields of special education instruction, research, and education. The programs are offered in K-8 and 5-12 Instructional Strategist I: Mild/Moderate, and K-12 Instructional Strategist II: BD/LD areas. All teacher licensure/certification programs are approved by the Iowa Department of Education.

  • Our undergraduate endorsement program prepares students to teach special education in elementary: Kindergarten through 8th grade.
  • Our graduate programs (M.A.) provide in-depth theoretical and field work experiences in special education.
  • Our Ph.D. program builds on the theoretical and practical knowledge of our candidates, while preparing them with the necessary research skills to attain positions in research and leadership in higher level educational institutions.
  • Our faculty is dedicated to continued research and professional development in special education. The Center for Disability Research and Education (CDRE pronounced "cedar") is a great informational tool for those interested in more about instructional practices, our faculty's areas of interest, contact information, and current news and research projects.

If you are considering a career in special education, please watch this 5 minute video from the U.S. Department of Education.

Also, please take a few minutes to browse our webpage for more information about our programs, degrees, admission requirements, contact us, and any other questions you might have!

For more in depth information please take a look at our M.A.Ph.D., Ed.S.ConsultantResources, People, and FAQ pages.
