Margaret S. Crocco, Professor and Dean

Margaret Crocco earned her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in American Civilization. She has taught American History, American Studies, and Women’s History at colleges in Maryland, Texas, and New Jersey. For eight years, she taught at a high school in New Jersey. Before coming to the University of Iowa, she was professor and coordinator of the Program in Social Studies at Teachers College, Columbia University. Her research interests include teaching women’s history, social studies teacher education, and multicultural education.

Bruce R. Fehn, Associate Professor

As a member of the social studies education program Bruce Fehn teaches a course on secondary school social studies methods. In the course students learn how to use simulations, movies, role playing and other teaching strategies. He also teaches a graduate seminar titled “History Teaching and Learning. In the seminar graduate students examine research on how and why history teachers use documentary films, graphic novels, and other resources to teach history. Recently, Professor Fehn began to offer a course titled “Disabilities and Historical Documentary Making.” Students in the course team with disabled adults to actually produce documentaries. After teaching for seven year in the United States, Greece and Spain, he earned his PhD in history at the University Wisconsin-Madison in 1991. Professor Fehn has published articles in the areas of women’s history, African-American history, history education, and documentary making in elementary and secondary classrooms.

Gregory E. Hamot, Professor and Program Coordinator

Professor Hamot taught history and social studies for fifteen years in Chicago area secondary schools before earning his Ph.D. in social studies and global education at The Ohio State University. Dr. Hamot has a special interest in global and civic education, and has worked extensively with social studies educators from Poland, the Czech Republic, Armenia, Bulgaria, and Kyrgyzstan. In the social studies program, Professor Hamot offers teacher preparation courses, a course on infusing global perspectives into the curriculum, and seminars on the history and foundations of social studies education. In addition, he is Coordinator for International Students and Programs in the College of Education and serves the university as Director of The University of Iowa Center for Human Rights.  He holds appointments in the university’s Center for Russian, Eastern European, and Eurasian Studies and in International Programs, as well as membership on the university’s International Programs Executive Committee.
