Music Education

School of Music logoThe Music Education Program at The University of Iowa offers undergraduate certification courses for K-12 licensure in vocal and instrumental music for students pursuing or who have completed their bachelor’s degree in music. We also offer graduate courses for the Master of Arts in Music (Music Education emphasis) and the Doctor of Philosophy in Music (Music Education emphasis) degrees. The program is nationally known for preparing excellent practitioners and scholars.

Our faculty members are internationally known for their innovative community engaged partnerships including the Oakdale Prison Community Choir, the prison choir’s Songwriters’ Workshop, the Voices of Experience Partnership with the University of Iowa, and the New Horizons Band Program. We offer opportunities for unique scholarly and teaching activities connected directly to community programs as well as nurture new and innovative musical partnerships.

    As one of the College of Education’s oldest alumni, Gracka Gerardi, who received her bachelor’s degree in Music Education in 1936, has seen quite a bit of change over the years, but consistent has been her profound love of music and joy of sharing it with others through her work as an educator.

    The Iowa City New Horizons Band is a local chapter of a large global network of bands that provide adults 55 years of age and older with the opportunity to learn an instrument and make music.
