Welcome to the Ph.D. Program in Language, Literacy, and Culture!
The Program in Language, Literacy, and Culture (LLC) offers a Ph.D. that brings together scholarly traditions and contemporary theory in literacy and cultural studies.
The LLC Program provides a home in which advanced graduate students work with a faculty advisor to design a course of study. Students choose from multiple doctoral level courses within the program and advanced, interdisciplinary courses across the University of Iowa campus. Course work provides both a broad background in relevant theoretical and research literature and opportunities to conduct original studies that explore the nature of literacy practices both in and out of school.
LLC doctoral students come to us from a range of national and international contexts and have professional experiences teaching in an array of settings from early childhood through adulthood. In common, our students share a commitment to exploring and investigating contemporary issues in literacy practices throughout childhood and adulthood, in schools, homes, and community contexts.
The LLC Program has a rich legacy of placing graduates in careers as tenure track professors who teach and conduct research in colleges and universities and become national and international leaders in literacy studies. Graduates of the Program have also been successful in careers as curriculum leaders and administrators of literacy programs.
Our faculty are top scholars in national and international fields of literacy studies with an impressive range of teaching and scholarly experiences across literacy contexts. We take pride in working closely with our doctoral students, including them in our research activities, mentoring them in writing for publication and presenting research at national and international conferences, and providing them with opportunities to teach at the college level.
