Required Core Courses 07E:186 Curriculum Foundations This course is an introduction to the key conceptual elements in the field of curriculum studies, which includes discourse on definitions, historical perspectives, philosophies, theories of knowledge, models and theories of learning, and emerging directions in the development of the shaping of new ideas in the field. 07E:300 Design and Organization of Curriculum This course represents one approach to the design and organization of the curriculum. It is not an exclusive approach, but it is historically sanctioned in the progressive literature and is distinctly embodied in the Tyler Rationale. The approach used here requires a commitment to certain theoretical principles, but in the end, is open enough to allow for the exercise of professional creativity and intelligence. The course pursues questions pertaining to the general purposes and aims of schooling, specific instructional approaches to be used, specific content to be covered, and the development of evaluative strategies. Each of these components in the curriculum has to be coordinated in a manner that results in a coherent and compelling presentation of learning experiences. 07B:381 Analysis and Appraisal of Curriculum This course engages in an analysis of the systematic procedures and resources used in the identification and evaluation of a given school district's curricular program, mostly from the perspective of a school administrator. 07P:255 Construction and Use of Evaluation Instruments This course offers an experience in the design and construction of measures used in educational evaluation, focusing on achievement tests, attitude scales, performance measures, and questionnaires. The emphasis is on methods of instrument development and the evaluation of instrument characteristics. 07P:413 or its equivalent is a suggested prerequisite.
