Course Description

Secondary Classroom Management 7S:171 is designed to help prospective middle and secondary teachers understand the special characteristics of the classroom environment and their implications for organization and management. Through assigned readings, class discussions, written assignments, and class presentations, students will become familiar with concepts and principles that teachers can use when thinking about the managerial tasks encountered in the classroom; thus, gaining an understanding of research-based principles, concepts, and practices for creating classrooms conducive to teaching and learning, and to begin applying this research base to their own management philosophy and management plans.

Management Memo / Student Interest Survey / Parent Communication Log Assignment

Students will prepare a Management Memo (i.e., a document presented in a format of their choosing that communicates their expectations for behavior that can be presented to their students and their students' family members), a Student Interest Survey (i.e., a survey including questions of their choosing presented in a format of their design that communicates their interest in getting to know their students), and a Parent/Guardian Communication Log (i.e., a log that will provide evidence of their interest in fostering family-school collaboration, as well as their awareness of the need to document their ongoing communication with the parents/guardians of their students) that they envision using in their effort to create and maintain an environment conducive to teaching and learning in their classroom.
