Course Description

This course is designed to introduce prospective teachers to social studies education in secondary schools.  Major factors in reaching this goal include the field experience practicum and subsequent reflection on this experience.  For example, we will explore the connection between our ongoing subject matter preparation and teacher preparation at the University and the teaching and learning process in secondary social studies classes observed during school visits.  Additionally, class meetings on campus will supplement and facilitate reaching this goal through readings on the nature of teaching and learning in social studies education.  Ultimately, we seek to connect theory and practice--through reflection--as we develop a reasoned, warranted philosophy on teaching and learning the social studies in secondary schools.
