Course Description

Goals

Practicum: provide students with opportunities to observe and participate in the instruction of the music education curriculum in K-12 schools.

Seminar:

  • provide students with opportunities to discuss observations made in the practicum experience.
  • increase student knowledge and understanding of terminology, policies, procedures, instructional techniques, curriculum, and teaching opportunities in music.
  • enhance the practicum experience and future professional education courses.
  • allow each student to make a more informed decision regarding continuation in the Teacher Education Program.

Objectives

  • Obtain initial exposure to teaching from a professional perspective.
  • Demonstrate understanding of basic teaching skills (planning, delivery, motivation, classroom management, assessment).
  • Demonstrate understanding of a comprehensive music curriculum.
  • Demonstrate understanding of national standards for music education.
  • Demonstrate understanding of administering a music program (scheduling, facilities, equipment, public relations).
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the history of music education in America.
  • Demonstrate an initial, yet well-articulated, philosophy of music education.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of internet-based resources.

Students spend 50 hours during the semester observing instruction and participating in limited teaching/assessment experiences. Excerpts from student journals reporting their observations and reflections will be uploaded to their web ePortfolios.

Students prepare lesson plans that reflect MENC, The National Association for Music recommendations for national educational standards in music. These lesson plans will be uploaded to their web ePortfolios.

D: Instructional Strategies

Students prepare formal and informal assessment rubrics of musical behaviors. These tools will be uploaded to their web ePortfolios.
