Course Description

This course provides students with an overview of concepts and issues surrounding the education of second language (L2) learners in the K-12 context. Topics addressed include student characteristics, factors that influence teachers and students, various teaching methods/ approaches, theories of second language acquisition, cultural issues, parent involvement, classroom-based research, and assessment. Students also have the opportunity to investigate a topic related to their own interests and will bring all of their learning together in a personal philosophy of teaching. Classroom activities will include interactive lectures, small- and large-group discussion, student presentations, and, possibly, guest speakers.
