Information for Students

Volunteer Opportunities

Practicum

  • Practicum refers to any early field experience in a PK-12 classroom in which students progress toward the student teaching semester. Practicum experiences vary within each program area and range from 5 to over 100 hours.  Student teaching approval includes successful completion of practicum experiences. Questions may be directed to the staff or faculty member responsible for the course.

Student Teaching

  • Student Teaching is the culminating field experience of the teacher education program.  This field experience is an all day, full-semester placement in a school setting that is generally completed the final fall or spring semester of enrollment in the teacher education program.  Applications must be submitted one year in advance.  Information regarding student teaching options and the application process are discussed in detail during the elementary or secondary orientation course.
  • Students are generally not placed in buildings in which they attended as students, have had a practicum, have been employed, or in which they have relatives employed.  When possible, assignments will be made in the preference area indicated; however, due to the difficulty in placing all students in the "Central" or Iowa City area, the only guarantee is that a placement will not be made in the area student prefers "not to be placed".
  • Since student teaching is considered a fulltime commitment, employment or registration for university coursework during student teaching is not recommended. The student teaching experience needs to be approached as a priority.
  • Transportation to the student teaching assignment is the student teacher's responsibility.  Overall the average commute time to a student teaching placement is 30 minutes.
  • Go to main page for Fees associated with the student teaching semester.
  • Questions may be directed to the staff in the Office of Field Experiences in N310 LC.
