Teach Grant An MA or MAT student in Developmental Reading, Foreign Language/ESL Education, Mathematics Education, Science Education or Special Education is eligible to apply for a TEACH grant. The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program provides up to $4,000 per year ($8,000 total) in grants for graduate students in exchange for four years of teaching in a low-income school. Last year there were 965 schools in Iowa that qualified as low-income schools. Should you apply for and receive TEACH grant monies and fail to complete four years of teaching in a designated school, your grant money converts to an unsubsidized federal direct loan with interest from the date of disbursement. Most appointments are for nine months beginning with the start of the academic year. Some appointments are for summer sessions only. Appointments are usually made in late spring for the coming academic year. Applicants should request application information to the contact below for each individual assistantship position. Applicants should check directly with individual programs or departments for positions that may not be advertised here. All open assistantship opportunities must also be advertised on the Graduate Assistantship Bulletin Board. Living-Learning Community Graduate Assistant Applicants should 1) be a graduate student in the Department of Teaching and Learning, 2) possess strong organization skills and creativity, and 3) be motivated to assist students who have an interest in education. The College of Education supports a living-learning community (LLC) for first and second year students who have indicated an interest in the elementary major or a secondary-level teaching endorsement program. Incoming students will have the advantage of living in a community that supports their career aspirations and academic/social transition to campus life. Experience gained in the living-learning community can help the student determine goals, interests and commitment to careers in teaching. Admittance to the LLC does not secure admittance to the Teacher Education Program. There will be a limit of 50 students admitted to this living-learning community.
