Graduate Admission

The Office of Education Services coordinates the procedures for admission to programs in the College of Education at both the Undergraduate and Graduate levels. Either the College of Liberal Arts or the Graduate College governs all programs. The application process, therefore, involves application to the College of Liberal Arts or Graduate College in addition to the College of Education.

The College of Education offers the following graduate degrees:

  • M.A. (with or without thesis)
  • M.S. (With or without thesis)
  • M.A.T. (Master of Arts in Teaching) Teacher Education Program Policies apply
  • Ed.S. (Educational Specialist)
  • Ph.D.

All College of Education Graduate level programs are governed by the Graduate College therefore, we recommend that you become familiar with Graduate College Rules and Regulations.

We also recommend that you become familiar with the following Important Degree Requirements for each graduate degree:

  • Certification only non-degree status designed for licensure program completion.
  • Professional Improvement - non-degree status under which a student can take a limited number of individual courses.
These statuses require regular departmental admission to the Graduate College even though neither of these are degree granting statuses.

The Office of Admissions can provide information on admissions procedures. Graduate Admission materials are coordinated in the College of Education by Sue Cline (Ph.D., Ed.S., Cert., PI, and all international students) and Debbie Rogers (M.A./M.S./M.A.T).

Degree offerings, majors, application requirements, and deadlines vary by program. Check the Academic Department web pages for details.

Application to all graduate programs (degree or non-degree) in the College of Education requires official GRE general test scores.

All College of Education programs require that at least 2 letters of recommendation accompany the Graduate College Application. We provide a printable copy of the Graduate Application letter of recommendation form for the convenience of your writers. We will also accept a text written letter of recommendation.

TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAMS

Students who have completed a baccalaureate degree may be admitted to a teacher preparation program in one of two ways.

  1. Apply to the College of Liberal Arts as post-baccalaureate students with senior standing.
  2. Apply to the Graduate College with their objective stated as "certification only" or in some secondary teaching areas with a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) objective (English, Foreign Language, Science). Or to the Social Studies M.A. Program B.

Admission to teacher education programs is competitive. Admission requirements may vary by program and are based on demand and faculty availability.

  • Apply to The University of Iowa Graduate College with the appropriate subject area major. The Office of Admissions has application information.

  • Complete the Application for Admission to a Teacher Education Program (TEP), and submit all materials required of this application including an official report of GRE scores.
    *Teacher Education Program Application Deadlines
March 15, for summer session or fall semester admission
(Beginning March 1, 2013, application deadline for summer or fall admission will be March 1)
    October 1, spring semester admission

  • In addition to the other requirements of the application to the Teacher Education Program, applicants who have been enrolled in an education methods course or field experience at another institution are required to submit an additional Student Consent for Release of Records authorizing the College of Education to communicate with the other institution about the applicant's academic performance and professional behaviors. Note that this Student Consent form is different from and additional to the Student Consent form contained in the Teacher Education Program application packet.

  • All College of Education graduate programs require that official GRE scores be submitted before an application can be reviewed. Required is a GRE General Test or GRE revised General Test Graduate Institution Report of Scores.
Minimum scores for admission to the Teacher Education Program are: Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning composite of 900 (General Test; minimum 1080 beginning with the March 1, 2013, application deadline) or 294 (revised General Test; minimum 300 beginning with the March 1, 2013, application deadline), with 3.0 on the Analytical Writing section.
See academic program site for score preferences for all other degree programs.

  • A 3.00 grade-point average on all college course work as well as course work completed at The University of Iowa (some secondary teaching programs may have higher admission g.p.a. and s.h. standards).

We will not accept a graduate program application with a g.p.a. below 2.50.  Applications with a g.p.a. between 2.50 and 3.00 will be considered for admission.  A student with a g.p.a. below 3.00 must demonstrate an exceptional strength worthy of being supported for a petition to the Graduate College for admission to the program.  Such a petition is made by the program faculty.
