Fehn, Bruce R., Associate Professor and Program Coordinator

After teaching for many years in secondary schools in the United States and Europe, Dr. Fehn returned to the United States to earn a Ph.D. in history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He presently teaches a course on instructional methods in the social studies as well as an advanced seminar on problems of historical understanding. In addition to writing about the history of race and gender relations in the United States, Dr. Fehn also studies how students think and write about history. He has a particular interest in historical cognition, multicultural education, and gender issues in social studies education.

Hamot, Gregory E., Assistant Professor

Professor Hamot earned his Ph.D. in social studies and global education at Ohio State University. He taught history and social studies for fifteen years in Chicago area secondary schools. Dr. Hamot has a special interest in global and civic education, and has worked extensively with social studies educators from Poland, the Czech Republic, and Armenia. In the social studies program Professor Hamot offers teacher preparation courses, a course on infusing global studies into the curriculum, and seminars on the history and foundations of social studies education.

Wade, Rahima, Associate Professor

Associate Professor Wade earned her Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and teaches the elementary social studies education courses at the University of Iowa. Her areas of interest in regard to program development and research are community service-learning and democratic education. Dr. Wade has many resources available for service-learning programs and in January 1997, her book, Community Service-Learning: A guide to including service in the public school curriculum was published by the State University of New York Press. Dr. Wade also coordinates collaborative programs between teacher education programs and local school districts in Iowa with funding from the Corporation for National Service, the Iowa Department of Education, and the University of Iowa College of Education. Dr. Wade is currently director of the National Service-Learning in Teacher Education Partnership, a consortium funded by the Corporation for National Service.
