The DeGowin Blood Center is a hospital-based blood center that collects blood for University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics patients. Each week more than 600 blood products are transfused at the hospital.
The blood center is staffed by physicans, medical technologists, nurses, and technicians who have training and certification in transfusion medicine.
It is registered with the Food and Drug Administration and accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks and the College of American Pathologists.
In FY 2005, the DeGowin Blood Center collected:
- 9,621 units of red blood cells
- 4,767 units of platelets
- held 196 blood drives
University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics transfused:
- 17,798 red blood cells
- 11,641 plasma and platelet products
- 32, 425 blood products
