Staff Awards 2005

Elizabeth Holm received the IOWA for implementing our College of Education Lean Lunch series. The Lean Lunch is an open invitation for everyone in the College of Education to attend and bring a healthy lunch item to share. Elizabeth plans the Lean Lunch around a theme and often invites presenters from campus and the community to share expertise in areas relating to health and balance. Lean Lunch topics have included: yoga, blood pressure screening, colorful choices/balanced eating, stress management, relaxation techniques, feeding your healthy spirit, and aroma therapy. Participants in the program bring healthy recipes, gardening tips and advice to share. Taken from Elizabeth’s nomination form, “A growing number continue to take part in the Lean Lunch program because of Elizabeth’s commitment and genuine desire to help those around her. The series is consistently well organized and fun. Elizabeth strives to develop topics of interest with a simple approach that fosters healthy practices and ‘healthy’ camaraderie for all of us.”

Karen Price received the IOWA for her volunteer work as a Rape Aggression Defense instructor for The University of Iowa Department of Public Safety. Karen has been a Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) instructor for two years. She first became interested in volunteering her time to become an instructor after she participated in the RAD course. RAD is offered free at The University of Iowa and is a nationwide program aimed at reducing violence for everyone. For Karen, the major benefit of teaching and participating in the RAD program is providing training to women to promote safety awareness and risk reduction. Ian Scott, nominator of the RAD instructors, indicates that the RAD team has taught RAD programs for over 10 years with hundreds of students, staff, faculty and families having participated in the training.
