McNabb's research interests center around contemporary
educational reforms in the United States and Thailand. Dr.
McNabb's interest in Thailand began with his Peace Corps service
at Thammasat University (1968-71) and has developed through
multiple research and consulting visits, including a Fulbright
year with his family in Chiangmai (1990-91). Dr. McNabb's
most recent trip to Thailand was taken in October, 1999 to
attend an economics conference and visit Burapha University.
On
the U.S. side, McNabb has been active in the Iowa Association
for Alternative Education for many years, serves on the state
board of the IAAE, and has conducted research studies on teachers
and students in Iowa's small alternative schools. His current
research involves the development of alternative assessment
measure to accurately reflect the social and academic gains
of at-risk students. McNabb also coordinates the Human Relations
Program in the College of Education, which involves supervising
and mentoring seven graduate students teaching assistants
each term. This course, which explores multicultural topics,
is a state-mandated course for all teacher education students.
