We advise applicants interested in seeking financial assistance to pursue potential sources of funding by contacting a local bank for student loan information, a guidance counselor to learn about local scholarships, or other service providers for funding information. The REACH Program does not qualify for federal financial aid at this time. Need-based scholarships may be available.

REACH Scholarships--Financial Support for Your Student

Individual and corporate donations have been earmarked as scholarship funds for REACH students.  Generous need-based scholarships are available for REACH students.  To be considered for a REACH scholarship, the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) must be submitted and the REACH Financial Assistance application must be completed by March 1.

Completing the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov is easy, secure, and fast. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at 319-384-2127 or the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID.

Scholarship award decisions are made in late spring by the Scholarship Commitee. Families will receive a decision letter by mail. This scholarship award is contingent on the student's successful completion of each semester. In the event that a REACH scholarship recipient is unable to complete a semester, he or she will need to repay the scholarship amount.

REACH Scholarship Award Information

  • Has awarded over $350,000 awarded since 2008
  • Pays for up to 75% of family's need for Iowa residents
  • Pays for up to 50% of family's need for non residents
  • 80% of students applying in 2011-2012 received scholarships
  • Funding is supported by individual and corporate gift

Financial Statement

As part of the enrollment process, applicants for REACH must submit evidence of adequate support to cover the costs of one full year of participation in REACH. Once the student is offered a place in the Program, the student’s admission cannot be finalized without proper certification of financial ability to provide support. This information is requested annually for continuation into the 2nd year of the REACH Program.

Billing Information

At the beginning of each semester (in August and January), the student will receive an electronic UBill for the total contracted charges, which include REACH Program fees, University fees, room, and board for the semester.

Payments should be sent directly to the University Billing Office. The first bill is available to view on the student's UBill  account on August 1st with payment due on August 22nd. An updated UBill statment is available each month through the student's UBill account.

UBills can be accessed via the ISIS system by parents once a guest account is set-up. The UBill and ISIS Guest Account information is presented during summer orientation.

Reimbursement for Withdrawal and Dismissal

Students considering withdrawing from the REACH Program are required to discuss their desire to withdraw with their REACH Advisor and their parents before starting the process.

Requests for withdrawal require the student to submit a completed Student Withdrawal Card (available at the REACH Office). The effective date of withdrawal is the date the completed card is returned to the REACH Office. REACH staff notify The University of Iowa Registrar’s Office.

Program Fee adjustments for the REACH Program are as follows:

If withdrawal or dismissal occurs within:
Weeks 1-4 of the semester, reimbursement is 65% of the semester program fee.
Weeks 5-8 of the semester, reimbursement is 50% of the semester program fee.
Weeks 9-12 of the semester, reimbursement is 25% of the semester program fee.
Weeks 13-16 of the semester, there is no reimbursement.

Mandatory fees required by The University of Iowa which are paid at the beginning of the semester are NOT reimbursed.

University Housing Contract Obligations (specific to REACH students): The student and family must notify University Housing to cancel the student's housing contract. A student who withdraws or is dismissed from REACH is responsible for the room fee for the entire academic year if the space is unable to be occupied in accordance with University Housing and REACH policies.
