"I chose The University of Iowa Master's program because of the interactions I had with faculty and graduate students. The students I met from the program were impressive and passionate about their work. When I met with the faculty, they did not automatically tell me to come to Iowa, they encouraged me to find the right fit." MA student |
The
SDP Master of Arts program integrates theory and practice
and is designed to be completed in two years of full-time
study. The M.A. provides preparation for a wide variety
of entry- to mid-level college positions, including - but
not limited to -- admissions and orientation, student activities,
academic advising, new student programs, career planning
and placement, residence life, and international student
services. The M.A. in SDP can, with sufficient professional
experience, serve as a foundation for positions such as
dean of students.
Students
are required to pass written comprehensive examinations;
a master's thesis is optional.
The
program provides significant opportunities to work with
faculty members on research projects and topics of special
interest. Our graduate students tend to be actively engaged
in their own professional development through conference
presentations, mentoring, research, and writing for publication. |
Preference
will be given to applicants who meet the following criteria:
Minimum
undergraduate GPA of 3.0
-
Completion of the
Graduate Record Exam (GRE)
-
Evidence
of significant undergraduate leadership experience, writing
ability, and fit with the program
Although
these are general criteria, the admissions committee considers
each applicant's entire portfolio. Interviews sometimes
are required; applicants will be contacted to schedule an
interview if necessary.
