| Experiential Learning (MA Students) |
The SDP MA program requires experiential coursework in the form of practica and internships. These requirements are, in part, mandated by accreditation. The SDP MA program meets the accreditation standards for graduate programs in student affairs practice of the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). These standards are carried out in a number of ways: the development and implementation of the curriculum, the relationship students have with faculty, the staffing of the graduate program, and through what CACREP calls "clinical instruction," or, in our case, an experiential curriculum.
Practica
All students must complete one practicum in the MA program, and many choose additional practica (called an advanced practicum.) In addition to student affairs settings, MA students may also apply to teach the College Transition seminar for incoming first-year students. For a detailed description of the practicum experience, please read the Practicum Handbook.
Internships
MA students are required to complete 600 clock hours of internship. Most students complete the internship requirement during the second-year MA assistantship. For more details, please read the Internship Handbook.
Assistantships
Although there is no centralized placement service, we will assist you in identifying current assistantship opportunities. Graduate Assistantships (GAs) are paid positions varying from quarter-time (10 hrs/wk) to half-time (20 hrs/wk), and always include out of state tuition waivers and often include tuition renumeration. Interviews are conducted each year during Campus Visit Days in March. |

Graduate Student Development Association
GSDA was founded in 1976 to promote the professional and personal development of students in the College Student Personnel Program (now called Graduate Programs in Student Affairs). This organization provides programs for professional improvement; develops and affirms professional standards and competencies; creates a sense of community among students, faculty, and staff who are interested in student affairs practice; and aids in the communication of ideas and information among its members. In past years, GSDA has promoted the availability of assistantships on campus; organized trips to national and state conventions; and coordinated educational and social events such as speakers, receptions, awards, and student networks. GSDA members have presented programs at regional and national conferences. GSDA is also interested in organizing and sponsoring programs and activities for both the professional education and personal enjoyment of its members.
