M.S.(Master of Science)

Admission

Applicants must meet the admission requirements of the Graduate College.  The Master of Science (M.S.) program in science education assumes that candidates have completed an undergraduate major in a given science area (or combination of science areas), science education, or in elementary education with a science emphasis.   Teaching licensure/certification is recommended.


Coursework Requirements

The M.S. in science education requires a minimum of 38 s.h. of graduate coursework.  A candidate's specific program of study will be approved on an individual basis with the science education faculty.

7S:257 Learning in the Science Classroom* 3 s.h.

7S:259 Advanced Pedagogy* 3 s.h.

7S:250 Assessment in Teaching & Research* 3 s.h.

7S:355 Research in Science Education—(two registrations of 3 s.h. each-can be concurrent) 6 s.h.

Research work to begin Spring semester of first year of enrollment.

7S:258 Writing in the Science Classroom 3 s.h.

160:250 Introduction to Rhetoric of Science 3 s.h.

7E:304 Schooling in the United States*  3 s.h.OR

7S:333 Seminar on Teacher Education* 3 s.h.

7E:300 Design and Organization of Curriculum 3 s.h.

7P:275 Constructivism and Design of Instruction 3 s.h.

7P:143 Intro to Statistical Methods 3 s.h.

7P:202 Understanding Educational Research* 3 s.h.

7P:220 Quantitative Educational Research Methods 3 s.h.

Final Examination

Students must complete a thesis. A final oral examination is administered on campus where the candidate defends his/her thesis. This examination should include a critical inquiry into the purposes, methods, and results of the thesis research investigation.

Examining Committee

The final examination is conducted by a committee of no fewer than three members of the graduate faculty. A member of the graduate faculty from outside science education is required in those cases where a related field outside science education is included in the examining committee.
