M.A.T.(Master of Arts in Science Education)

This degree is designed primarily for those who decide that they would like to become teachers and have already completed a B.S. and B.A. in an area of science. It features advanced work in science along with the courses required for certification. It is a means by which candidates can attain a Master's degree and certification at the same time.  This degree program assumes the candidate has completed considerable science, at least 56 s.h., as an undergraduate, but no previous course work in education.

Students should have an equivalent degree program as those in Science Education in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Iowa. An applicant with a strong major from another institution may be licensed only in that particular science discipline. A GPA of 3.0 is required for admission and must be maintained throughout the enrollment period.

Required Education Courses (44 s.h.)

The following three courses--07S:190, 07S:195, and 07S:102--should be taken during the first semester of registration.

Science Specialization

The following courses are required of the undergraduate degree in science education at the University of Iowa. They need not be repeated for M.A.T. candidates who will need one or more advanced courses in their major science area as well as those from other science disciplines that will prepare candidates for grades 6-9 which are typically interdisciplinary and not discipline focused.

Required courses (unless completed as part of the undergraduate degree):

97:128 Meaning of Science (3 s.h.)
97:130 Science in Historical Perspective (3 s.h.)

AT LEAST TWO OF THE FOLLOWING (unless completed at the undergraduate level):

097:102 Societal and Educational Applications of Earth Science and Environmental Sciences (3 s.h.)

097:103 Societal and Educational Applications of Biological Sciences (3 s.h.)

097:105 Societal and Educational Applications of Physical Sciences (3 s.h.)

097:106 Societal and Educational Applications of Chemical Concepts Sciences (3 s.h.)

097:140 Problems in Integrating the Teaching of Environmental Science (3 s.h.)

Electives: At least one graduate level course in a science discipline.

Comprehensive Examination

A final examination, at the discretion of the examining committee, consists of two parts and is both written and oral. The science and science education comprehensive examinations will not duplicate course examinations, but will assess both science education and the science specialization area chosen by the candidate. See Policies for MAT Examination for specific information on comprehensive exams.
