ABOUT . . .
JOHN E. QUINN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This award was established to honor the memory of John E.
Quinn whose daughter, Bridget, was a member of the College
of Education's class of 2003. To his family, friends
and colleagues, John Quinn was the embodiment of a self-made
man. Forced at age 15 to run the family farm following
his father's death, Quinn was a farmer, United States Air
Force MP, and state trouper all before an age when most students
are still trying to graduate from The University of Iowa.
Following 34 years of service with the Iowa State Patrol,
Quinn was appointed by President Bush as a U.S. Marshall for
the Northern District of Iowa. Despite battling cancer,
he was sworn into service on May 17, 2002. Quinn died
one month later - he was just 58 years old. Conversations
about Quinn often talk of his commitment to law enforcement,
his compassion for those in need, and the value he placed
on education. While a state trouper, he often said, "Education
is a way for kids to save themselves before they have to see
me."
