1. How do I apply to the school counseling program?

2. What if I already have a gifted endorsement?
 

---If you already hold an endorsement in gifted and talented education from the state of Iowa, this will be taken into consideration by your advisor during your plan of study development. Graduate college rules related to course acceptance and transfer will apply.

3. Can I teach full-time and complete the program?
 

---The school counseling program classes begin no earlier than 4:00 p.m. in the afternoon. It is possible to work a daytime job and still complete the program. The only exception is completion of the Internship requirements during your final year of the program. Typically, students must dedicated two days per week to Internship for the fall and spring semesters. However, students employed as school counselors may use 1 day per week during 1 semester at their site of employment.

4. Are there summer classes?
 

---Summer classes are available for school counseling students.

5. Can I be a school counselor without a teaching license or teaching background?
 

---In 2001 The Iowa Legislature change Iowa Code to allow non-teachers the ability to be licensed as school counselors. There are a couple of basic education classes that must be completed in addition to the required school counseling courses.  However, you should be aware The University of Iowa school counseling program admissions requires evidence of work with school age children preferable 1 year beyond earning a bachelor's degree.

6. What is the admissions process for the school counseling program?

7. Why is a criminal background check necessary to be a school counselor?
  A criminal background check is required to be licensed as a school counselor. This is for the protection of children and adolescents. There are certain offences that would prohibit someone from seeking a career as a school counselors. Students may be required to complete a national background check prior to clinical placement to ensure eligibility for working with children and adolescents in schools. All graduating school counseling students will be required to complete a national background check for licensure as a school counselor (For more information from Iowa Code 282--25.3 click here).
