Student Teaching Philosophy

Teaching and learning are two of the most important things in life. As a teacher I plan to focus my attention on teaching students how to learn. It is through strategies and methods of learning that students are able to retain and enjoy the information that is taught. Without the general skills of learning, I believe that students would be unable to benefit from schooling.

Through the study of learning I plan to incorporate student interests and backgrounds into my classroom. It is important that all students feel welcome and at home in their classroom environment, and it is one of my goals to be successful at this. A classroom in which a student feels comfortable is a classroom in which a student can learn. Involving students in the décor in a classroom and allowing them to put their personal touch on the organization can help create a relaxed and at ease environment.

The number one reason that students are required to attend school is that they prepare to take on the world. They must understand how to communicate, be able to make friends, be independent in their thoughts and behaviors and become responsible for their own actions. Citizenship, responsibility, trustworthiness, caring, fairness and respect are the character counts pillars that we, as a school, follow. Through my classroom I hope to promote the idea that school is important and that it is necessary in all peoples’ lives in order to develop a strong and stable personality.

I plan to give students the power to make and follow rules that they believe are fair and necessary. Students should be involved in the running of their classroom in order to show them that they are important and worthy of responsibility. They will be responsible for following a daily routine and taking care of their daily duties. This will encourage the students to become independent and take initiative in their lives. Having high expectations for students gives them something to work towards.

Students should be instilled with a sense of independence; however, they should also be taught to work cooperatively. In my classroom, I will encourage students to work together to solve their problems, both personal and educational. I will promote responsibility and fairness in their group work. Having students work together can decrease the pressure being placed on the course work and increase a student’s love for learning.

Students must be shown that they are cared for and respected. Their cultural backgrounds, family lives and learning styles will all be considered in the development of lessons. When students know that they are appreciated and that their teachers are there to help them they are more likely to accelerate in school. I plan to know each of my students on a personal basis and do my best to meet each of their needs individually.

While it is difficult, I think that it is important to create lessons that can be easily modified to different student levels so that each student can be challenged within his/her zone of proximal development. One way to do this is to create a classroom where students are encouraged and expected to challenge themselves when doing activities. I think that it is important to create ways for each student to have the opportunity to use their strengths to better the classroom. In addition to this, when working, students can be paired to complement one another so that their different strengths are able to facilitate learning. Overall, it is important to recognize individual student needs and strengths in order to create an environment where each person is able to succeed.

Student/Teacher Expectations

Cooperative Learning

Lesson Plan 1: This is a lesson plan that was part of my unit. It was designed to help children of all abilities find appreciation for words. By focusing on only one word, students were not inhibited by not being able to read a text.

Lesson Plan 2: This lesson was part of our science curriculum. By working in groups with students of varying ability levels, group members were able to help each other so that everyone could understand what was to be accomplished. During the lesson, the teacher also takes time to model each step while explaining what should be done.

Journal: This is an excerpt from a journal that I wrote about the lesson from example 1. It was discussing the lesson overall, as well as one particular student's success in the project.
