Building
our Rainforest

|
Materials
needed for the lesson
|
Tape measure,
yardsticks, big rolls of paper, pencils, scissors, stepladder
|
|
Purpose
|
The purpose
of this lesson is for the students to apply their math and measuring skills
to create "tree trunk" panels for their tropical rainforest.
|
|
Objectives
|
- Using
a stepladder and tape measure or yardstick, TLW (the learner will) demonstrate
measuring skills by using a measuring device to accurately measure from
the ceiling to the floor in the classroom.
- TLW correctly
label and record measurements on paper.
- Given
a big roll of paper, TLW refer to recorded measurements to construct
panels for the tree trunks of their class rainforest.
|
|
Procedures
|
a) Attention-getter
The teacher will remind the students that the whole classroom will soon
be turned into a tropical rainforest. Today they will start planning and
making materials for their rainforest.
b) Activities
- Working
in groups of 3 or more, the students will use a tape measure or a yardstick
to measure the height from the floor to the ceiling. One student can
use the stepladder to hold one end of the tape measure or yardstick
to the ceiling, while another student can hold the other end to the
floor.
- Another
student will accurately record the measurements of the height from the
ceiling to the floor.
- After
making necessary measurements, the students will cut out strips from
the big roll of paper to match their height measurements.
- The students
will then double check their measurements by holding the strips of paper
up to the ceiling (using the stepladder). If the strip of paper is the
correct length, the students can measure more strips of paper.
- Students
will continue to repeat this process until the teacher determines when
they are finished.
c) Closure/Review
activities
When finished, the teacher will ask the students how tall their trees
will be. Ask which floor of the rainforest these trees would be located
in.
|
|
Assessment
|
- The teacher
will be looking for proper use of measuring devices used to measure
the distance from the ceiling to the floor.
- The teacher
will look to see if students are recording their measurements on paper.
- The teacher
will observe to see if students are using their recorded information
to construct strips of paper that are correct height.

Evaluation
|
I will determine
this lesson a success if students are able to use their measuring skills
to construct "tree trunk" strips. I will also determine this lesson a
success if students are enjoying their involvement in creating their class
rainforest.
