Important information for job seeking

The employment portfolio is a valuable job-seeking tool. Employers can view your technology skills while simultaneously viewing your academic knowledge and professional skills. Include the URL of your portfolio on your résumé and in cover letters or email used for job seeking. To prepare a paper version of your portfolio for interview purposes, print key pages from the web-version and place in a folder, or letter-size presentation/report book.

National Survey Results
In a 2002 national survey conducted by the Educational Placement Office school hiring officials were asked to comment about essential portfolio content, when the portfolios is reviewed, and the impact a candidates's portfolio has in the employment process.
"
Portfolios that reflect standards and recognized teaching proficiencies can increase job chances
"
Significant results: Nearly 80% of the responding school administrators stated that a job seeker's portfolio can be a significant selection tool along with references, credentials, transcripts, résumé, cover letter, and personal interview. A well-prepared portfolio can contribute to your success. However, hiring officials caution that a poorly-constructed portfolio can diminish your chance of employment.

As you build your employment portfolio select key items from coursework, field experience and student teaching that reveal your knowledge and understanding of sound educational theory and practice. Employers have limited time to review portfolio materials and loathe the scrapbook look, so be selective and be concerned about the quality of the materials you present. For key tips and directions for creating your employment portfolio go to the FAQ section of the ePortfolio™ Resources site.

Snapshots
Expand your ePortfolio™ to meet new teacher assessment requirements

Many states require new teachers to meet proficiency standards for teacher licensure. As a new teacher in Iowa, you will be required to meet Iowa's 8 standards (with 42 criteria) in your first two years of teaching. The Iowa ePortfolio(TM) model that you have been using is considered an innovative and acceptable method for demonstrating teaching proficiencies. If you have accepted a teaching position outside the state of Iowa, you may encounter similar assessment requirements.
