Textbooks, Libraries and Professional Journals Textbooks Books for courses in the Rehabilitation Counseling Program typically may be purchased at the Iowa Memorial Union (IMU) Bookstore. Educational material can be charged here on the student's University I.D. card. Sometimes reading packets are purchased at Copy Centers as directed by the course instructor. Alternatively a checkout system is often available for single readings from faculty. Students should be prepared to accept the responsibility of beginning to build their own professional reference library throughout their curriculum. Textbooks and recommended references will be indicated to the students periodically by faculty. Although this will involve significant investment, it will constitute a recognized asset in future professional practice. Some textbooks and assigned readings will be put on Reserve at a library on campus. Such Reserve Readings will be announced in class and be available during library hours. Libraries The University's Main Library and its 11 departmental libraries, plus the Law Library, contain more than 3 million volumes. The 11 departmental libraries are art, biology, business administration, chemistry-botany, engineering, geology, mathematics, music, physics, psychology, and health sciences library. The University Libraries and the Law Library have implemented an automated library catalog. The on-line catalog, OASIS (On-line Access System for Information Sources), when fully implemented allows the user to determine accessibility to an item and where it is located. OASIS terminals are available at each library. Information resources in compact disc format, six CD-ROM computerized indexes are available. Students and faculty can do computer searches on a wide variety of topics. Customized on-line database searching is available by appointment. Literature searches are available at the Psychology Library in Seashore Hall through the Psych:Lit computer system. For a small fee, students can also have an extensive literature search conducted by a librarian at the Health Science Library. The Blommers Library is located on the third floor of South Lindquist Center. At the time of registration each student is given a Student Identification Card. This card will permit the user to check out books at all University of Iowa libraries. Copying machines are located throughout the libraries. Professional Journals The following professional journals will be referenced in your graduate studies in Rehabilitation Counseling.
