About REACH Applications for enrollment for Fall 2010 are now available. Educational research documents that post-secondary education is a prerequisite to employment. Advancing educational practices in adult learning is a major research university’s fundamental goal. Mission To create a living-learning experience where young adults with learning and cognitive disabilities are empowered with the skills necessary to be independent, engaged and contributing members of the community, while gaining a career-focused and enriching education. REACH also contributes to the strategic mission of The University of Iowa, and the College of Education through training future generations of educators and professionals. Vision REACH aspires to be nationally recognized as a leader in post-secondary education for students with multiple learning and cognitive disabilities. Philosophy Our philosophy and educational approach focuses on fostering independence while helping our students learn to make positive life choices. The following components are viewed as the fundamentals of self-determination for each student: problem solving, independent learning, self-awareness, self-advocacy, and leadership development. Strategic Goals Our curriculum and faculty promote the development of self-determination as the cornerstone of self-sufficiency in our students. This focus enables the REACH student to become a responsible and participating citizen in contemporary society. Students are encouraged to develop independence and actively seek what is required for their personal fulfillment. Our educators emphasize positive expectations and equip students with an education and aspirations that promote continued career progress, social involvement and lifelong learning.
