The College of Education

Purpose: To determine career paths of former students.
(Did graduates continue in teaching, move within the field
of education, or leave the field for other career options?)
Target: UI graduates who accepted initial teaching positions upon earning
a Bachelor's Degree with teacher licensure three, five, or seven
years ago (1994-1995, 1996-1997, and 1998-1999)
Methodology: Stratified random sample
Telephone survey of 150 UI graduates
Sorting
Options:
Data can be sorted by gender, teaching field, location,
graduation date, residency as student
Strategy: Cover letter introduced survey project and asked for participation via telephone or email
Career
Classification:

Graduates placed in one of three career classifications:

Stayed = currently teaching in a classroom setting
Moved = currently employed in education (administration or
other professional positions) or enrolled in graduate education studies
Left = not employed in education (includes unemployed)

Project
Duration:
November 1-10, 2002: Population selected and UI Alumni Office
contacted for current addresses and telephone numbers
November 14, 2002: Letter sent to selected graduates (signed by
James Marshall, Associate Dean) and prepared by Educational
Placement Office
December 9-14, 2002: Telephone survey calls made to selected
graduates
January 2-10, 2003: Data analyzed and reports developed
