Spring Diversity Event: Visit of middle school MAAAP (McKinley African American Awareness Program) students and teachers of African descent.

The College of Education and the Belin-Blank Center are once again working on an exciting diversity effort with the Cedar Rapids Community School District and the McKinley African American Awareness Program (MAAAP).  On April 17 close to 100 middle school MAAAP students and teachers of African descent will be visiting the College of Education and your participation is welcome.

COE faculty, staff and students are invited to join morning activities in Jones Commons and afternoon book discussions at the Belin-Blank Center. This year we are reading Audacity of Hope by Barack Obama. If you want a free copy of the book please contact Clar Baldus (335-6189) ASAP.

The itinerary for the day looks like:

National Disability Awareness Month Brown-bag Lunch

As part of National Disability Awareness Month, Faculty and Staff Disability Services is sponsoring and co-sponsoring several events throughout the month. One such event is a brown-bag lunch where James Stachowiak, ATP, will be presenting various forms of assistive technology that can be useful during the employment of individuals with a disability. He is the coordinator of Iowa Center for Assistive Technology Education and Research (ICATER), holds a Master’s Degree in Biomedical/Rehabilitation Engineering from the University of Michigan and is a RESNA certified Assistive Technology Practitioner.

Disability Awareness Panel

The College of Education Diversity Committee presents a panel discussion focusing on disability issues in the schools, facilitated by Noel Estrada-Hernandez, Assistant Professor, CRSD. Students will share stories about how disabilities have impacted their educational experiences.

The ability to make learning accessible to all children in a classroom is a skill teachers must possess when leaving the UI. Future teachers as well as current faculty and staff will benefit from hearing about the challenges faced in school by these individuals. We invite you to join us for this discussion and to bring questions of your own. The event is part of a class but is also free and open to the public.
