A two-part web course on Telework and Effective Accommodations

The Iowa Center for Assistive Technology Education and Research (ICATER) is hosting a two-part web course on Telework and Effective Accommodations through the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Session 1 – Teleworking as a Reasonable Accommodation for Employees with Significant Disabilities

February 1, 2007, 11:00 – 12:15, Room N105 Lindquist Center
This first session looks at the policy aspects of telework, including when teleworking itself might be effective as an accommodation. The session will feature case studies of successful and unsuccessful teleworkers.

Session 2 – Workplace Accommodations for Teleworkers with Disabilities

February 8, 2007, 11:00 – 12:15, Room N105 Lindquist Center
This second session looks at the types of jobs and job tasks involved with telework, and additional accommodations used by teleworkers. The session will feature case studies and results from employee interviews.

The courses would benefit Vocational Rehab staff, faculty, counselors and transition staff. Participation is free, however, if you are interested in earning CEUs (accepted by RESNA) and CRCC (2.5 hours for both sessions) upon course completion, register at http://www.pe.gatech.edu (search on keyword “telework”) Course Numbers ARCH-1002P & ARCH-1003P $30 each or $50 for both.

Dr. Jonathan Silin, " What Can Be Said? Silence, Voice and Socially Relevant Curriculum"

Arguing that controversial questions about the world outside the school inevitably enter our classrooms. Dr. Silin will discuss ethical and practical implications of taking the stance that students from beginning in preschool and through the highest levels of education have an inalienable right to be heard no matter what their concerns. Dr. Silin's talk will be followed by a discussion and a reception. Open to the public.

National Coming Out Week: Coming Out For Equality in Education

The College of Education Diversity Committee invites you to National Coming Out Week - October 8th - October 12th . This year we are celebrating Coming Out For Equality in Education (COFEE). Events are as follows:

  • COFEE TABLE: Monday, Oct. 8-12.  Stop by the information table between 9 & 3 all week on the 2nd floor of the Lindquist Center for information & resources about COFEE.
  • COFEE TALK: Wednesday, Oct. 10th, 4-5pm.  A panel of high school students, teachers, and administrators from area schools talk about the challenges & benefits of creating safe & accepting schools.  Panel will be held in Jones Commons.
  • COFEE CAKE: Thursday, Oct 11th, All Day.  October 11th is National Coming Out Day.  Join the College of Edcuation in celebratin this joyous occasion with free cake all day at the COFEE table.
  • COFEE & CARTOONS: Friday, Oct. 12th, Noon.  Bring a lunch to Jones Commons for a screening of "Oliver Button is a Star!," a children's story about bullying and embracing difference.  The video braids animation, music, classroom activities, and more.  A brief discussion will follow.
