Carol Acheterhof is a former high school teacher who currently writes a humor column for over 50 newspapers, and she has published five books.Her youngest daughter died of a brain tumor, and another daughter sustained a traumatic brain injury, She will speak on her experiences and on how we can all cope with stress suing humor and creativity.

On Recruitment and Retention of
Faculty of Color in Academe: Implications for Practice and for Further Research

Speaker: Dr. Caroline Sotello Viernes Turner, Professor, Division of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, Arizona State University.

Join us for a presentation by Professor Turner as she discusses research in effectively recruiting and retaining diverse faculty. The focus of her comments will relate specifically to Colleges of Education and will be especially appropriate for faculty and graduate students interested in this research area.

Dr. Turner has authored and co-authored several books including Faculty of Color in Academe: Bittersweet Success, Racial and Ethnic Diversity in Higher Education and Diversifying the Faculty: A Guidebook for Search Committees. Her focus as a researcher and teacher include the importance of access and equity in higher education, faculty development, and organizational change. She is the founder of an annual national symposium on the recruitment and retention of faculty of color, “Keeping Our Faculties,” at the University of Minnesota.

Passport to New Opportunities – Teacher Education Programs

For currently enrolled undergraduate students at UI, particularly students from underrepresented populations, to become more familiar with the elementary and secondary Teacher Education Programs in the College of Education.
Students will learn specifically about the application process for the programs, especially the Special Consideration Policy for select student populations, as well as educational scholarships and loan forgiveness programs. Additional informational on various resources in the College of Education will also be available.

Free food, hot chocolate, and hot apple cider will be offered. Door prizes will be distributed as well.
