Happy “Where Do You Work?” Wednesday! This week meet alumna Maria-Victoria Perez (MA ’15 HESA).

Perez is entering into her third year as the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and Director of Student Success at the California Institute of the Arts. She serves as a confidential student advocate to students who find themselves in crisis, and helps students navigate through the institute’s policies and procedures.

“I love working with students who are artistic. I enjoy getting to work with my students to help them through crisis, but also see the beautiful work they have put so much time and effort into gives me a deeper perspective into the work I do with them,” says Perez.

Perez came to the University of Iowa after receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in theatre from Georgia College and State University, a Master of Arts degree in women’s studies from University of Alabama, and working professionally for some time. She felt as though she needed a stronger foundation to further her professional career, and knew that the Higher Education and Student Affairs program would give her that opportunity.

“The HESA faculty provided us with a strong foundation of understanding students to experience the field first hand with amazing mentors and professionals,” says Perez. “I walked away from Iowa knowing that I could do so much more now that I had the education and the hands-on experience.”
