The Music Education Program at the University of Iowa
offers undergraduate certification courses for teaching music and
graduate courses for the Master of Arts in Music Education and the
Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education degrees. The program is nationally
known for preparing excellent practitioners and scholars.
Undergraduates obtain teacher licensure in music education by
completing:
- the requirements for a Bachelor of Music degree in the School of Music
- and the appropriate licensure program (e.g., Band, Choral, String). Before
taking required professional education courses, undergraduate students
must be admitted to the Teacher
Education Program administered by the Office of Teacher Education and Student Services in the College of Education.
Entering masters students typically hold an
undergraduate degree in music, but can pursue the MA plus certification.
