Admission guidelines for the Ph.D. in
Language, Literacy, and Culture

Prior to admission to the LLC program, applicants apply for admission to the Graduate College. Requirements for this admission process may be found at the Graduate College web site or the the admissions information site for the Graduate College. The Graduate College application is available at this site and can be electronically submitted. You can also submit a request and/or download printable Graduate College application materials through the Office of Admissions.

The deadline for application for admission to the LLC program is
December 1
. Admissions files including all supporting materials must be complete by that time.

Requirements for admission to the LLC program include:

  • at least two years of experience teaching or tutoring in language or literacy (reading, writing, English, or language arts);
  • either an earned master's degree or the completion of a significant amount of graduate course work in a literacy-related field;
  • a significant statement of purpose explaining the applicant's related experiences, reasons for pursuing graduate study in LLC, and his or her future goals;
  • transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate course work;
  • Graduate Record Exam scores;
  • a sample of academic writing;
  • and three letters of recommendation.
