Educators from across the University

design for learning, a method of
teaching and presenting materials that is
accessible to students with disabilities.

ICATER's assistive technology exhibit at UI State Fair booth

The Iowa Center for Assistive Technology Education and Research (ICATER) in the UI College of Education will host the assistive technology exhibit. Fairgoers will see demonstrations of some of the cutting-edge technology being used in educational settings to help students with disabilities access educational opportunities. Visitors will experience what it is like to use a head controlled mouse and see demonstrations of speech recognition software.

UI receives grant to increase accessibility for disabled college students

The UI College of Education's Iowa Center for Assistive Technology Education and Research received a one-year, $117,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education to develop technology that will make higher education more accessible for people with a variety of disabilities.

UI Research gets $117,093 Grant

Rep. Dave Loebsack D-Iowa announced that the department of Education awarded the University of Iowa a grant totaling $117,093. This funding will go to the Iowa Center for Assistive Technology Education and Research which aims to improve the university experience for students with disablities.

ICATER Aims to Help UI, Community with Assistive Technology

“Many teachers encounter situations in class where assistive technology may be helpful, but they don’t know where to begin,” said James Stachowiak, ICATER’s coordinator. “So it’s important that future teachers and counselors know how the technologies work and are able to identify students who may benefit from their use.” ICATER's goal is to train all Teacher Education students in assistive technologies.
