Purpose

To recognize outstanding educational research efforts in Iowa.
To perpetuate Mr. Urban's conviction that quality research is the driving force behind improved practice/results.
To honor Mr. Urban for his support for research and education.

Awardees receive monetary awards of $4,000 and are honored at an award ceremony.

The award, initiated in 1997, is given annually to a researcher who meets the following criteria:

Is nominated by an active scholar in Iowa or elsewhere who is familiar with the general area of research or scholarship completed by the nominee.
Has published the research or scholarship in a refereed publication within the past two calendar years and prior to the nomination deadline.
Lives or works in Iowa at the time of the nomination deadline.
