Dr. Jackie M. Blount is Professor of Historical, Comparative, and Philosophical Studies in Education at Iowa State University. In 1993, she received her doctoral degree in the social foundation of education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She joined the Iowa State University faculty immediately afterwards. Currently she serves as an Associate Dean in the College of Human Sciences. Dr. Blount's research focuses on the history of gender and sexuality in American schools. Her work has been published in such journals as the Harvard Educational Review, Review of Educational Research, and Educational Administration Quarterly. Her books include Destined to Rule the Schools (1998) and Fit to Teach: Same-Sex Desire, Gender, and School Work in the Twentieth Century (2004), which was named as Honorable Mention for the History of Education Society's Outstanding Book Award for 2006. Currently, she is writing a biography of Ella Flagg Young, Superintendent of Chicago Schools from 1909-1915. Dr. Blount was the first recipient of the FINE Foundation's Thomas N. Urban Educational Research Award. She also received Iowa State University's Award for Early Excellence in Teaching. She (and Marilyn Tallerico) won the Davis Award for most outstanding article published in the 2004 volume of Educational Administration Quarterly.
