No Child Left Behind
These four programs created in 2003 examine the federal No Child Left Behind
Act of 2001 and feature discussion by local educators, College of Education
faculty and testing experts on the implications of the legislation for
students, parents, and teachers in Iowa and across the nation.
Programs
Iowa's Approaches to NCLB
This program focuses on Iowa's plans for complying with the NCLB, including the state-level implementation of Reading First.
Policy Implications
NCLB will change basic school policy at both the national and local levels. College of Education professor Peter Hlebowitsh puts the legislation in historical perspective, while Iowa City school official Pam Ehly describes how it is affecting curricular decisions locally.
Testing
The NCLB legislation mandates new testing for both students and teachers. In this program, three experts on standardized testing examine what tests can and cannot tell us about academic growth.
Potential Problems and Pitfalls
In this panel discussion, taped October 24, 2003, participants from the College of Education, local teachers and representatives of elected officials address issues of testing, scientific research, and policy as related to NCLB.
