The Politics of Reading and Qualitative Research

My dissertation work is nestled within the context of the ELTAP project mentioned below. I am interested in what teachers' talk reveals about the teaching of reading and language arts in times of heavy mandates for accountability.

Children’s Literature

I served as research assistant and associate producer in the ELTAP project initiated by Dr. Kathryn Whitmore and Dr. Gail Boldt at The University of Iowa. This research resulted in the creation of a DVD of literacy practices of thirteen exemplary elementary teachers in the Iowa City school district.

Intermediate Reading Methods and Assessment

I am very interested in how teachers use standardized reading programs to teach reading. This paper comments on a qualitative research study done in a school that uses Accelerated Reader to teach reading. I have also written about my own use of Accelerated Reader as a classroom teacher.
