Final Evaluation and Certification

  1. The student’s reflective statement of development over time, including both mistakes and successes.
  2. The student’s statement of teaching philosophy in 2-3 pages.
  3. A scaled down portfolio sample to use for job applications, to include what the student sees as his or her best syllabus and course assignments, as well as summary of course evaluation comments and data.

Evaluation is based on whether the student's philosophy and portfolio are appropriate for use in applying for the sort of positions the student seeks, and seeing that student has reached a basic level of preparation and reflection.

More extensive, qualitative judgments would presumably appear in a letter of recommendation written by a faculty member involved in the student’s teaching over time, one who had seen the student teach as well as read the statements and reviewed the full portfolio.

Certification

Following the completion of these requirements, the student's department of record will recommend the awarding of the Certificate to the Graduate College Advisory Committee. Upon approval by the Advisory Committee, the Certificate will be awarded by the Graduate College and a notation to that effect will be added to the student’s transcript. These procedures will provide an official record of the student’s accomplishments while the student seeks employment opportunities.
