Computer SoftwareThis page provides measurement and statistics-related information to both graduate students and practicing psychometricians. Here, you can find information about computer software available to psychometricians. (Note that the software listed here is for reference only and is not for promotional or advertising purposes.) A popular statistical and data preparation program. Available on computers in labs at the University of Iowa, the Statistics Outreach Center (both XP machines), and the Virtual Desktop. Students can purchase SAS Learning Edition from SAS Institute for $60.
A popular statistical software program used in the Social Sciences. Not as difficult to use as SAS, but not as flexible. Available on computers in labs at the University of Iowa, the Statistics Outreach Center (both XP machines), and the Virtual Desktop. Students can purchase SPSS 15 Student for Windows at the University Book Store for $100 or SPSS 15 Gradpack for Windows for $225. Free statistical software popular for its programming language capabilities. A myriad of statistical procedures are available through packages developed by statisticians around the world. Available on computers in labs at the University of Iowa and the Statistics Outreach Center. R is available for free download.
Statistical software for Bayesian analysis. WinBUGS is available on computers in labs at the University of Iowa and the Statistics Outreach Center. WinBUGS is available for free download. The Center for Advanced Studies in Measurement and Assessment maintains a series of free software programs for psychometric analyses. The free software includes programs for Generalizability Theory (GENOVA, urGENOVA, mGENOVA), Equating and Linking (CIPE, RAGE-RGEQUATE, Equating Error, PIE, POLYEQUATE, LEGS), Item Response Theory (ST, POLYST, STUIRT), and Classical Test Theory (BB-CLASS, MULT-CLASS, IRT-CLASS, POLYCSEM). The links below are software manuals available from CASMA's Research Report page. Other manuals are contained in the programs' ZIP files.
Scientific Software International is the publisher of many popular psychometric and statistical software programs, including BILOG, MULTILOG, LISREL, HLM, PARSCALE, and TESTFACT. All of these programs are available in the Statistics Outreach Center. Individual programs can be purchased from SSI; each program costs between $250 and $500. Rental editions and a free student version of LISREL are also available. A "point-and-click" SEM software program made by the folks at SPSS. A free student version is available for download. (An AMOS license is approximately $1000.) AMOS is available in the Statistics Outreach Center. A text-based SEM software program. A free demo version is available for download. M-PLUS is available to students for $200; a "university" license is available for $600. M-PLUS is available in the Statistics Outreach Center and the ITC at Seashore Hall. Assessment Systems Corporation Suite Assessment Systems Corporation provides information to dozens of software programs devoted to psychometrics and assessment. In particular, DIFPACK, DIMTEST, and POLY-DIMTEST can be located here. These three software packages are available at the Statistics Outreach Center. EQS is a structural equation modeling program. An academic license can be purchased for $600. EQS is available on computers in the Statistics Outreach Center. JMP is statistical analysis software created by the folks at SAS. An academic license is available for $600. JMP is available on computers in the Statistics Outreach Center. The WINSTEPS web site provides information on the WINSTEPS software, as well as information about conferences and papers on Rasch measurement. The WINSTEPS program is available for $149 from the developer. WINSTEPS is available at the Statistics Outreach Center. LaTeX is a free math typesetting program. Documents that contains many mathematical formulas can be written using LaTeX. Normally, a version of LaTeX (such as MiKTeX) and a file editor (such as TeXNic Center) need to be installed.
A suite of programs that "mimics" the Microsoft Office suite of programs. Includes a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation program, database program, and math typesetting program. OpenOffice.org software can open Microsoft Office files and save files as Microsoft Office files. Available for free download. Frequently used by the staff at Iowa Testing Programs, PFE is a free text editor. The software is no longer updated or supported. Another popular text editor. TextPad contains options to compile Java code, for those that program in Java. A free evaluation copy is available from the publisher. EigenMath is an easy-to-use computer algebra system. The software is free and performs basic mathematical operations, including algebra, geometry, and calculus.
Maxima is a computer algebra system. It contains more functions than EigenMath, but not as many functions as Mathematica or Maple. Maxima is a free software program. Virtual Desktop (UIowa Students only)
