Comprehensive Exams

The Ph.D. comprehensive examination in the Foreign Language and ESL Education program emphasizes competencies and coursework. Further, whereas the master's comprehensive exam emphasizes breadth, the Ph.D. exam emphasizes depth in two or more narrowly defined areas of research and theory, and breadth in a third cognate area. To insure the highest standards of excellence in all areas, the comprehensive examination committee will consist of all four members of the Foreign Language and ESL Education faculty, one member representing the student's cognate area. To qualify to take the examinations the student must first successfully complete the required coursework and consult with his or her advisor. The examination is comprised of three-3 hour examinations in foreign language and ESL education and the cognate area.
