Purpose and Philosophy
We mark the start of a very important tradition for graduate students in the College of Education. A number of Graduate Students in the Foreign Language/ESL Education Program wish to launch a colloquial series to help us reflect upon our professional development in a structured but colloquial way. The Colloquial series title "From Practice to Theory in Language Education" and then to Practice embraces our main goal—to think critically upon the influence of our beliefs in our language teaching practice. We are convinced that by reflecting upon what we do as language practitioners, we may reshape our own language theory.
We hope to expand on the university academic input by inviting a number of different friends to these meetings, from graduate students, language teachers, to professors. They have accepted to share a portion of their research interests and converse informally about how language theory influenced their research studies and how these applications have reshaped their ideas and theory. In this way, we may express our queries after the presentation, and will have the opportunity to think more carefully about why we do what we do both now and in the future.
We are in different stages of our professional growth and bring different experiences to our alma mater. We hope that these conversational meetings become a bridge for us to listen to our 'voices'. Please keep in mind that our contributions are crucial to the success of these meetings. Everyone will benefit from any comments or questions we may have following the presentation. In addition, feel free to make any suggestions for the improvement of these meetings. Finally, we hope that you realize that these informal gatherings may become a unique opportunity for you, as critical intellectuals, to become more involved in action and participatory research now or in the future by listening and sharing our 'voices' when dealing with professional issues that interest all of us.
