FAC Meeting Minutes

February 5, 2004 - 10 am
Attending
: Micheline Chalhoub-Deville, Rahima Wade, Nancy Jackson, Scott McNabb, Dave Jepsen, Joyce Moore

Dean Damico gave us the CIC brochure on how the CIC Colleges of Education are distinctive and also a packet of web pages from the Colleges of Education from our peer institutions. We will use these materials to plan our efforts to develop a distinctive mission for our College.

The Dean said that we don't have the tuition (and thus financial resources) of many of the other Big 10 Schools and in part this influence the fact that we are seen as more of a regional campus than a national one. We draw principally on Iowa and Illinois in our College.

Update on the Review of the College - The Dean is chairing this review. She will be writing drafts of sections based on the committee notes submitted. These drafts will then go to the DEOs, Carolyn and Jim. The review is due by the end of May. She hopes to have the draft done by the beginning of May and put it up on the web for comments from any faculty. This review will be the new Provost's introduction to the College of Education.

Review of the Dean - Anne DiPardo is chairing this committee. We discussed options for how we might contribute to this review as individuals and/or collectively as the FAC. Micheline will contact Anne to see what is planned so far.

The minutes from the December meeting were read, a couple of typos edited, and then approved.

Curriculum Committee Task Force - This group met on February 2nd for the first time with Micheline and Dean Damico. They are charged to look at course duplication, cross listing issues vs. college wide numbers for some courses, and the need for an ongoing curriculum committee vs. a task force. The group elected Peter Hlebowitsch as chair. They will report back to us in April.

Dave Jepsen's Program Coordinator Report - One program coordinator is on leave and has some concerns, but Dave hasn't been able to talk to this person about the concerns specifically. There are only 3 program coordinators in CRSD and they each get a quarter time RA.

Scott McNabb's Program Coordinator Report - There are only 3 program coordinators in EPLS. He talked to Larry Bartlett, the DEO. Support is not an issue.

We then discussed how support for program coordinators is largely (though not exclusively) a C & I issue. We will mention our conclusions on this issue at the end of year faculty meeting and perhaps on the web site. It was also suggested that Gary Sasso, DEO of C & I and the C & I program coordinators meet together so Gary can share his ideas for supporting them next year and so all can be apprised that the FAC has completed their assignment in regards to PCs. Scott McNabb will draft a conclusion/recommendation re: our ending recommendations in regard to the Program Coordinators.

We concluded the meeting shortly after 11 am. Our next meeting is Thursday, Feb. 12 at 10:30 am.

Respectfully submitted,

Rahima Wade
