FAC Meeting Minutes

October 16, 2003
Attending: Micheline Chalhoub-Deville, Rahima Wade, Ellie Herman, Joyce Moore, Scott McNabb, Dave Jepsen, Nancy Jackson
Guest: Associate Dean Colvin

Associate Dean Colvin attended the meeting to talk with us about the Collegiate Teaching Award and new guidelines for how colleges are to recommend their own nominees. The FAC is being asked to nominate a committee to work with Carolyn to set up criteria for the selection. In the late winter, there will be a call for nominations. The committee appointed could also possibly oversee the process of selecting the nominee. Carolyn also informed us that there will be Presidential Teaching Awards this year, three for the entire university. There will be more money for these awards. It is possible that the committee working on the Collegiate Teaching Award criteria might also work on the Presidential Teaching Award. Carolyn will have more information about the latter soon.
We decided that one person from each divison/department would be best on this committee. We came up with and submitted a list of possible faculty to Associate Dean Colvin.

The September meeting minutes were read and approved unanimously.

We then spent considerable time discussing the Curriculum Task Force that the Dean has asked us to appoint. We debated the different issues that the task force might address and who the task force would report to. We also discussed the need for a curriculum committee and what its charge would be. We decided that the task force should address course overlap and college wide courses, among other issues, and that the task force should report back to us by Spring 2004 and then we will make a recommendation to the Dean as to whether there is a need for a standing Curriculum Committee. We also discussed various faculty we might invite to participate. Micheline (probably along with the Dean) will be sending a letter of invitation to one faculty member from each division/department for the task force.

We read the Dean's and DEOs' responses to the Program Coordinator Survey Recommendations and decided to pursue this issue further. Program coordinators are being compensated and supported in some departments and not in others and this is an inequitable and unacceptable situation. It was moved, seconded, and approved that Rahima and Micheline should draft a letter to the Dean in regard to support for program coordinators and that this draft would be sent to all FAC members for their feedback and approval. It was also moved, seconded, and approved to follow the same procedure with the letter inviting faculty to participate on the Curriculum Task Force.

Finally, we hope to receive a timeline for the Dean's review and noted that the FAC as a whole should meet with the Dean's review committee. The meeting adjourned at 11:30 am.

Respectfully submitted,

Rahima Wade
