The
Department of Educational Policy and Leadership Studies (EPLS)
offers programs that prepare education leaders, teachers,
professors, and researchers in the fields of educational administration,
higher education, and social foundations of education. The
academic programs, faculty, and students in the Department reflect
the richness of our diversities. EPLS offers its graduate
students a varied curriculum with particular strength in education
law, evaluation methodologies, education policy, economics
of education, educational demography, the history of American
education, epistemology and ethics, contemporary educational
reforms, and quality educational leadership.
The Department of Educational Policy and Leadership Studies
consists of approximately 250 students and 14 faculty members.
The EPLS faculty is recognized nationally for its scholarly
productivity. The faculty is also well-known for its interdisciplinary
research interests, as exemplified by many publications in
history, philosophy, sociology, law, testing and evaluation,
and other specialized education journals. The faculty and
graduate students engage both in qualitative and quantitative
research.Our research laboratory is equipped with leading-edge
technologies and provides both faculty and students with access
to large data files and other research materials. The EPLS
research lab has been established with the mission of providing
our students with highly effective research support for a
broad variety of educational policy research. Students work
closely with faculty in exploring their research interests
and learning about the use of various technologies.
Our programs are highly respected in the job market. Our graduates
hold prominent positions in government, in school districts,
in colleges and universities, and in business throughout the
United States and internationally.
Now I would like to introduce myself. My name is Larry Bartlett.
I am a Professor and Departmental Executive Officer in the
Department. In addition, I'm an Administrative Law Judge for
special education hearings in Iowa and for the Bureau of Indian
Affairs, in the United States Department of Interior, as well
as Iowa School administrator termination proceedings. I am
especially proud that one of my special education hearing
decisions was affirmed by the United States Supreme Court.
Currently, I teach courses on education law and the administration
of special education programs. I invite you to continue to
